It sounds like a dream situation: Lose weight the fun and easy way, because somewhere in the middle of the exercise, you have an orgasm! Yes, ever since 'going on a diet' became something that we will all started to think about it going on (and hating almost every minute of it), we looked for short-cuts to get the body we wanted. Noticing that you can sweat a lot during sex (at least if you're doing it right!) and that in certain positions you really have to flex or hold certain muscles for a long period of time led a lot of people to wonder just how useful sex was in staying in shape.
There's certainly something very attractive to the idea that you can look better naked by doing the activity that you'd get naked for in the first place. Heck, if you go the gym so you can stay healthy enough to have sex regularly without getting tried, why not make sex itself part of the exercise itself? And that is truly the key here, where you make regular sex part of your overall healthy lifestyle. With so many disappointing stats about how many people are overweight, having a great positive spin on the process of getting healthy is huge, so no matter how many pounds you shed directly from having a hot time between the sheets, just look at it as the most fun part of your new routine.
The catch is that it can't just be sex once a day to lose that belly fat. The actual numbers obviously differ from person to person, not just in the way their own body burns calories, but how they and their partners have sex. Certain positions and certain durations can greatly affect the overall impact of the exercise. Overall, though, if you have sex for half an hour, you lose somewhere between eighty-five and one hundred and fifty calories. Health experts say if you burn thirty five hundred calories (doesn't matter how, whether in the gym or in bed), that equals one pound of body fat.
A bit of basic multiplication and division can put this down to losing that one pound by having sex roughly thirty times. So if you have sex every day for a month, you'll lose one pound. While that's not nothing...it's not exactly a fat burner. In some ways it's a bit reassuring to know that there's no scams going on trying to convince people that you can lose a ton of weight this way. The simple science and math about the whole thing shows that it's more of a novelty experience than miracle weight-loss plan.
While you'll almost certainly get a sweat no matter how you are actually having sex - rocking your body in time with someone else, whether you are the giver or receiver - it shouldn't be a surprise that some positions can be a lot more effective at burning calories than others. Because missionary and spooning are the easiest positions to get into, they both require the least amount of physical exertion to remain in. The constant thrusting of missionary can give your upper body and biceps a bit more work to stay on top, but that's about it. Similarly, while it's great to look up and watch your partner bounce on top of your erection as they are in the forward or reverse cowgirl position - with you mostly just lying there and thrusting a bit in time - it should be obvious that they are working it a lot more than you are.
If you are looking for positions that will make you work a lot harder, there are plenty to choose from. If both you and your partner are standing up for penetration, you are already working harder, with your legs doing a lot more support work. If there are some height differences, you can use the stairway for leverage, or even the bed itself. There are even some equipment that you can buy, like sex swings and slings (yes, slings) that can elevate you or your partner's body, and open up a whole new world of positions to try.
For most of human history, there wasn't really exercise. There was just work. Certainly there was regularly training to do for certain types of work that were particularly physical (being a soldier, for example), but developing a healthy body wasn't the point. Being able to do your job well was the point, and being in great shape was incidental.
As the world industrialized, and leisure time exploded, some people - especially those in many new job fields which required a lot less physical activity (office work, doing a small, repetitive task on an assembly line) - sought out ways to stay healthy. Gyms, dumbbells, weight-lifting competitions all occurred in quick order throughout the twentieth century, and in the last several decades their have been fads ranging from jogging to jazzexcise to yoga to pilates to Mixed Martial Arts (where you can get inshore by learning how to break other people's arms).
Throwing in sex to the mix makes complete sense. Looking at it as a way to lose weight by focusing on muscle building and cardio is a fun and filthy way to incorporate it into the world of exercising. While we might be a long way off before there's a 'partners class' where you move from position to position to sweat it out together under the careful watch of an instructor, we're certainly getting close with all the stripper-pole focused dance/exercise classes that are becoming popular these days.
As noted above, you aren't exactly shedding a lot of weight every time you get it on. In fact, you have to make it happen quite often and quite regularly. Thirty minutes to lose about one hundred calories by doing something hot and fun is nice, but if you were serious about losing weight, you'll find than you can lose the same amount in ten minutes on a stair-master.
The truth is, using sex to lose weight will work much better when it's only one part of the overall lifestyle change of trying to lose weight. It's not like you can have the same routine of eating junk food and sitting around at work or home and just have sex often. That plan is not going to work very well at all. Having regular sex is going to be more of a psychological win during the process of losing weight the old fashioned way: Healthy eating and exercising (other types of exercising, that is) regularly. The idea being that if you eat right, and go to the gym or take classes, you'll be in better shape and be more excited and energized to have sex, and when you do, losing a bit of weight through that is the icing on the cake (although you should definitely not be eating a lot of cake).
As noted above, there's a lot you're going to do to get healthy other than have sex more often. And while this other stuff is the typical hard work that people have trouble keeping up with after a set amount of weeks or months, there's little things you can do to make both exercise and eating a little more fun (in a dirty way).
While you obviously have to keep things PG-in a public gym setting, there's no reason why you and your partner can't get a bit naughty while working out in the comfort of your own home. You may not have a bunch of specialized equipment, but doing some naked yoga side by side or lifting some weights and then removing an article of clothing after each set is a nice way to make exercising a bit steamier (and it's easy to go right into the specialized workout this entire article is referring to...).
Sexing up exercise is the easier of the two big changes here. It's hard to sex-up health food, other than some vegetable that come in a certain shape. Even when you bring some food into the bedroom (if that's your kink), you're typically drizzling chocolate on your lover, or spraying tufts of whipped cream on certain body parts, and there's nothing healthy about the food choices.
If you want to lose weight, the foods you are going to have to focus on eating is fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, grains, and nuts, and a huge slashing of the amount of processed foods you put into your body. But to add a bit of romance to the menu, why not add (in)famous aphrodisiacs, like oysters or truffles, and there are some great international cuisine choices that can help the libido, like sushi and edamame from Japan, and some latin dishes like gazpacho, or anything with avocado.
While losing weight by having sex immediately sounds like a thing you would do in a relationship (most likely a relationship that's long term), it doesn't have to be this way at all. If you're single, you might have even more of reason to lose weight and stay and shape: You're still looking for that special person. That means that on any date or one night stand, a nice icebreaker might be mentioning how you are aiming to live a healthier lifestyle (which makes you sound like a positive go-getter), and that part of this includes having dynamic and exciting sex life. Ideally you'll know the right time to mention this, which is not too early on in the first meeting.
It's a great way to meet people who might feel or look at sex the same way. While it might not be the beginnings of a relationship, it might be able to be a nice little months long fling where you exercise together, share food tips, and have a bunch of really hot sex in various ways where you can really 'feel the burn'. As long as your also keeping an eye on your sexual health (condoms, STD/STI tests), there's no reason why you couldn't share this journey with many different partners. You might even start a movement!
While the sex might play a small (but fun and essential role) in losing weight, there is always the challenge of making sure these pounds don't come creeping back. This means that the diet and exercise isn't temporary, but a new part of how your living your life going forward. And while that might mean a huge decrease in the consumption of potato chips while lazing on the couch, you can definitely use sex as your motivator. That's the fun activity that's become a lot easier to have (and to have more often) since you've started to lose weight, and that's what you should focus on to make sure the weight stays in your past.
